What makes it special: The jaw-dropping beauty of the caldera, the windy streets and the unique building styles on Santorini Island make it an unforgettable location for a honeymoon, anniversary or romantic trip. (FYI - A “caldera” is a volcanic crater. Santorini’s caldera is mostly underwater, but parts of the island sit on the caldera, and you can see more it off the shore from the towns of Fira, Imerovigli, Firastefani and Oia.)
Travel tips: For the most romantic trip, stay in a hotel on the caldera. The views can be breathtaking, like what is seen from the Santorini Princess hotel shown above. This hotel is right along possibly the most amazing hiking trail I’ve ever been on, which goes from Fira to Oia. (You can just hike part of the trail of course, as you can jump off at one of the towns along the way). The hotel is set just far away enough from the towns to make it feel private and special, but close enough that access is not hard via the hotel car or taxi. Because it is so extraordinary, it can also be very expensive. One way to get a room at a fraction of the price is to go mid-week or later in the season, such as September or October. Aside from sightseeing on land or relaxing in the hotels, the other “can’t miss” thing to do in Santorini is to take a day-long catamaran tour for an unforgettable experience.
